Types and types of data models

There are several types data models. These include conceptual schema and hierarchical data models, Entity relationship diagrams, Unified modeling languages, and Entity-relationship graphs. Choosing the right one depends on the type of data you need to model. Let's take a look at some of our most popular models. Here are some features of each. One can be used to make the building of a data modeling easier. Alternativly, you can use both concepts simultaneously.

Entity-relationship diagrams

When creating a data model, an entity-relationship diagram can be a helpful tool. Each entity's notation label should be descriptive. It should also be unique. An entity-relationship map should only show the relationships that are essential to understand the data models. It should be simple to understand and not contain duplicates. If more than one entity is contained, the individual entities should be represented in a separate diagram.

An Entity-Relationship diagram (ERD), is a visual representation that shows the structure of a database. It is a high-level conceptual representation of the database. It depicts the relationship of real-world objects to each other. Before implementing a database, an ER diagram is the best method. An ER diagram allows business users to understand the organization of data.

Conceptual schema

A conceptual Schema is a diagram that describes main entities and relationships in a data structure. Either the Extended Entity Relationship (EER), or UML class diagram can be used to express the schema. The conceptual schema design process begins with capturing information requirements in informal terms. These requirements are then converted to a cognitive model. After that, it applies appropriate data modelling language to the model.

A conceptual schema describes the semantics and structure of an information system. This high-level model shows the structure of a data base that serves a certain group of users. It hides the internal details of physical storage. This conceptual data modeling targets entities, types, and relationships relevant to users. It also includes constraints that limit the storage of data. It is distinct from a logical schema which describes the physical structure and functionality of a database.

Hierarchical data modeling

Using a hierarchical data model is beneficial for certain data types, such as relationships. The data model allows for the traversal of the hierarchy without having to break normalization rules. The higher a hierarchy is, the more likely it is that its attributes will be different than its children. There are two types of hierarchies: fixed-depth and ragged. The latter is distinguished by a nested tree system. As the hierarchy grows higher, the number of self-joins increases. An example: If an employee holds seven levels, then the employee is the seventh level manager.

A hierarchical model does not allow for composite records. Redundancy and inaccurate data can be caused by one-to-many relationships. This could be illustrated by a company having several departments and many team leaders. The same branch below Team Members could be called Ongoing Projects. The students have the option to take as many courses and data may contain more than one entry.

Unified modeling language

The Unified Modeling Language or UML is a general purpose modelling language for software-intensive programs. The Object Manager Group released the initial version in 1997. They integrated James Rumbaugh’s object modeling technique, Grady Booch’s part notation and Ivar Jorson's use-case notation. Unified Modeling Language 2.4.1 replaces it.

UML is a general purpose modeling language that lets you share and reuse models across platforms. It's a graphical modeling technique which uses static diagrams in order to represent a system's architecture and relationships. UML diagrams, unlike programming languages, can be shared between business users, developers, and other interested persons. UML does not itself represent a development process. However, it is used in conjunction with the development process to create a successful system.
