How to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce established the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. The HWOF's Los Angeles location is at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It is composed of 2,711 stars embedded into sidewalks along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents a person who has contributed to television, radio, theatre, music, motion pictures, or any other aspect of popular culture. There are currently 1,922 living persons listed on the HWOF.
To become a member of the HWOF, you must submit your name to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then submits your name to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, you receive a certificate of eligibility, which includes your name, date of birth, city of residence, occupation, and category. A bronze plaque with your personalization is also provided. This plaque will be attached to a base of concrete in front the designated star.
A current HWOF member can nominate you for a star or if you have made significant contributions in movies, television or radio. A committee evaluates the nominations and decides whether to approve them. If they do, they will send a letter explaining their decision to the applicant at his/her home address. The person who accepts the nomination will receive a second confirmation letter. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce then sends $25 to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.
The department issues an official check payable to Hollywood Chamber of commerce. This check is then sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the application submitted by the artist or organization. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce receives half of the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs receives the remaining half.
After an artist has received his/her Star, he/she can be eligible for the HWOF. To be eligible for the HWOF, the artist must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce any balance. The amount due will vary depending on how long ago you were nominated. If you were first nominated for a nomination in 1990, your owe $15,000. You'd owe $10,000 if you were previously nominated in 1990.
If you want to remove yourself from the HWOF, you need to contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and pay off the remainder of your debt. They will remove your name permanently from the HWOF list.
What age is required to become a HWOF star?
Nominations are open to anyone over 18 years of age. To be eligible for a star, you must still be alive. After receiving a star, one may still be nominated again after ten years.
What happens if I die before my star gets put up?
Your family members can nominate you for a star. If there are no living relatives, then the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place a memorial marker in front of the star.
